《酥油》 Sū Yóu is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Jiang Jue Chi 江觉迟. The novel borrows its name from a traditional Tibetan drink called Sū Yóu - it is made from butter or ghee which can be mixed with other savory ingredients. It tells the story of a girl from Mainland China who falls in love with a guy from Tibet. Director Guan Xi 管曦 graduated from USC School of Cinematic Arts, and has received Master of Fine Arts MFA degree. One of her works, Mandala, has received Best Student Short Film award from the Directors Guild of America Award.
Zhu Zhu 朱珠 will play the female lead, Mei Do 梅朵 and the male lead will be played by Tibetan actor Gengdeng Pengcuo 更登彭措. Parts of the movie will be shot in Daocheng County of Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, an autonomous prefecture of China occupying the western arm of Sichuan. The film's story takes place in the beautiful, meandering landscape of Tibet and the crew made a special trip to the deep mystical Tibetan plateau to scout for locations. Other filming locations include Beijing and Lebanon. On 8 September 2016, they held a Tibetan-style ceremony in Sichuan to mark the commencement of the film's shooting.
"Butter" 《酥油》 is co-produced by Ali Pictures 阿里影业, Poly Pictures 聚本影业, Barley Pictures 大麦影业, and Zhong Ying Ying Xiao 中影营销. Shooting is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. The movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 2017.
